They knew the Scriptures promised He would set up a new kingdom in Israel. He would deliver the Jewish people from the oppressive Roman rule and would rebuild the kingdom of Israel to its former glory under King David. The Jewish people had studied the Scriptures for years. The ancient prophets had given them clues of what to look for in the Messiah, the Anointed One of God, to prove His identity.Yet, with all they knew from Scripture, God had been silent with His people for the last 400 years, and life had grown quite difficult for the Jewish people. To make matters worse, an elite religious leadership had risen out of the Jewish people who had been legislating God's Word through burdensome man-made rules and traditions. Many of the Jewish people had become weary in their waiting. Would He really come to save them? Would they recognize Him? What would His kingdom look like?
