Solo para apaciguar su lamentable estado recibi??? el auxilio familiar, lo que si bien aliviaba un poco sus miserias, lo hund???a a???n m???s en la desesperaci???n al sentirse un hombre in???til y fracasado, obligado a vivir sin tener ???nimo para hacerlo. As???, y peor, transcurrieron los a???os que siguieron a la fat???dica ca???da de la Rep???blicaTodo el odio hacia a la Rep???blica recay??? sobre ???l, al que achacaron todas las culpas, aunque ???l personalmente no era ni el mayor ni el menor culpable, incluso, el no ser un hombre corrupto lo sumerg???a a???n en la mayor pobreza. Lejos quedaron sus grandes triunfos diplom???ticos, aunque ni siquiera ostentaba el t???tulo de Embajador, pero era el que hac???a y prestaba los grandes servicios que Florencia necesitaba para preservar su libertad, la paz, y no ser ultrajada y conquistada la ciudad.Ahora, siete a???os despu???s y en parte recuperado de aquel trauma, se dispon???a a escribir una magna obra sobre el arte de la guerra, necesaria para los que abogaban por la unificaci???n de Italia, en aquel momento compuesta por m???ltiples estados d???biles y dispersos, y a merced de las guerras de rapi???a de las potencias extranjeras, que campeaban libremente por la pen???nsula expoliando a la poblaci???n indefensa, saqueando ciudades, e hiriendo constantemente los sentimientos de libertad y soberan???a de los que un d???a, en ???pocas lejanas, se consideraron los due???os del mundo.Con su libro "Del arte de la guerra" Maquiavelo no pretend???a incentivar campa???as militares ofensivas, invadir territorios o dar lecciones del arte castrense a generales ni soldados, sino enfocar este delicado asunto desde un punto de vista pol???tico y bajo el magno principio de que la mejor forma de mantener la paz y la soberan???a de los pueblos es estar preparado para la guerra.
