If you feel caught between the traditional church and the emerging church, Jim Belcher's Deep Church forges a third way. He explores and evaluates the proposals of emerging church leaders and paints a picture of what an alternate, deep church looks like--a missional church committed to both tradition and culture, valuing innovation in worship, arts and community, but also creeds and confessions.

Jim Belcher is pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, CA. He has written Deep Church: A Third Way Beyond Emergent and Traditional for the pastor, seminarian, and lay person who is caught between the emergent and traditional camps of modern American Christianity and looking for clarity and perhaps a better way to do ministry. It is a thought-provoking, personal account of a pastor coming to grips with these two opposite sides and hoping to forge a climate of unity between them. After introductory chapters and the premise and purpose stated in chapter 3, the book is organized around seven aspects or ?fronts? of contention between the two camps. Belcher has done extensive research and reviews of literature from both sides to determine their general positions and gives these views in a natural and easy-to-read writing style. Belcher concludes each chapter with asking the questions, ?Is there a third way, is there any unity between these two camps?? and then portraying how he has found coherence in his church. This book is a good overview of positions in both camps for the person not conversant in current controversies and church literature. Belcher provides definitions, conversations, references and his inner thoughts and struggles with issues for the reader?s thorough understanding and continued reading and research. This book achieves its purposes and is helpful in this regard. This book is not ?do these seven steps and you?ll have a successful church? but it does engage the reader in asking questions and defining what church should and could be in their local context.
