Seller's Description:
Very Good+ Margry, a French archivist, prepared these volumes with the intent of providing original source material for the early French explorers who traveled and explored the newly discovered continent of North America; including New France, Louisiana, Texas, the West, the Mississippi River valley, etc. Of this first edition only 500 sets were printed for the U. S. Government, and the new information provided here caused Parkman to revise his Discovery of the Great West. This is still an invaluable source, and many documents and journals are available nowhere else. Jenkins notes that volume 3 contains the only complete printing of Jotel's journal. These volumes contain "reports, journals, and letters, many here first printed, illuminating French exploration and Indian trade, from Canada to the Gulf, from the St. Lawrence to the Rockies. "--Howes. Original green printed wrappers, uncut, most are also unopened, many still in original kraft wrapping paper from the publisher--this set has obviously never been read. As with many European publications, these volumes were originally shipped with the understanding that the purchaser would provide permanant bindings. One volume lacking rear wrapper, 2 volumes split at spine (unimportant as the intent was to bind them). An important work that is not often encountered in the original state from the publisher.
