Dido Hoare, a thirty-something antiquarian bookseller, is driving home to London after a buying trip. The night is stormy and she loses her way. Things turn frightening when someone with a pair of glaring headlights threatens to run her off the road. Somewhat shaken, Dido convinces herself that it was just a couple of drunken kids playing a stupid game with a female driver. But when her elderly father, Barnabas, receives a threatening note, and someone breaks into her bookstore, it becomes difficult for Dido to believe that her recent run-in was a mere coincidence. And Barnabas, a retired academic with a great mind for mysteries, suspects a connection between Dido's adventures and the reappearance of her shady ex-husband, Davey, whom trouble seems to follow. Dido finds herself in constant peril, until she and Barnabas manage to unravel the mystery of who is after her and what exactly it is that they want.
