1812. Bored with the mundane commitments of his new role as the Duke of Penrith's agent in the town of Woolbridge in Durham, returning soldier Raif Jarrett is having second thoughts about civilian life. As the Easter fairs come to town, markets where everything from ribbons to cattle is traded, the town readies itself for upheaval. The local mills are bringing in machinery, which will increase production, but jobs will be lost. As a group of radicals begin to rail against the plight of the workers and one of the judges brings in the military as a precaution, it seems Woolbridge is headed for trouble. When Raif's young cousin comes to stay and gets involved, Raif will be forced to act to keep his family safe and his town intact. Soon enough a salesman lies dead in his bed and a radical is brutally murdered out on the hillsides. I really recommend Death of a Radical - even (or maybe especially) if you wouldn't normally consider a period mystery book.
Rebecca writes beautifully, bringing the characters and the settings to life - in so much detail that you're there in the midst of it all. Her hero is a wonderful (and yes rather attractive) character, absolutely likeable but not without his complexities. I love the way you find out a bit more in the second book about Jarrett's background, but some of the past and certainly the future remain intriguing. And as for the blossoming attraction ... well I'll leave you to read the book and find out more about that.
This mystery has you gripped from the first to the last page. You are with Jarrett all the way, picking up clues, catching looks between people, facing the frustrations when you don't get the answer you're looking for. But all the while you can immerse yourself in Teesdale life in the Regency period - Rebecca's period detail is amazing.
Death of a Radical is so well written. If you've read its predecessor, The Duke's Agent, then it's a must - however if you haven't it stands alone really well.
