This is one of the best early spy novels, and the spy is an American, Matt Helm. A great read.

The Original - forget the movies & TV
If you are a spy novel reader into James Bond then you should not miss the Matt Helm series. Matt Helm is the American version of 007 without apology and without being shaken or stirred. 'Death of a Citizen' is required reading for any of the books that come later starring Matt Helm. Here is where we find out where he comes from and the origin of his grim and ruthless approach to his work. The fun thing about this first novel are the 'innocent' circumstances that parlay Mr. Helm back into his sordid career that he thought he had grown out of after the war. Donald Hamilton makes us friends very quickly and deftly pulls us down the same seamy road as our hero keeps following. We become secret agents ourselves and only our stop to get off the bus keeps us from losing ourselves totally into the morass of imminent terror.
