Deadhouse Gates is the second impressive book in the Malazan series by Steven Erikson. The last few chapters of the book are worth 5 stars all by themselves, especially the chapters dealing with Cpl. Kalam.
The majority of this book deals with a different part of the Malazan empire than was introduced in book one. It takes place mostly in the holy desert Rarraku.
But to be honest my absolute favorite part of this book was the chapter dealing with Kalam going to assassinate the Empress. The fight he gets into with the Claw is one of the most awesomly described I've ever read. I won't spoil it for anyone but if you like military fantasy and love to read about very competent (Kalam) characters fighting against great odds get this book.
