Imagine a book set in the world of the Laundry Files, but without the original cast of characters. Think of all the possibilities! And it is a caper. I love capers.
I love eldritch horror written with a humorous slant. I loved most of the Laundry Files books, but was getting tired of the original cast.
I did not love this book.
Because now imagine that Stross phoned in the first 3/4ths of the book. On two tin cans connected by a string. And he seems ... tired.
Interesting things do happen in this book, but not before lots of things that aren't particularly interesting happen. The Peter Pan bits felt stitched on like a certain boy's shadow. And I kept thinking of the characters by their too-obvious D&D alignments and getting confused because there were too many chaotic goods.
Plus, the book's big bad is uber-wealthy corporate creep named Rupert Bigge. Get it? Ey?
In short, I was disappointed by this book. If you want to enter the world of the Laundry Files, don't do it by this door.
