Actually, this is not a bad book. But it was written so soon after 1989 that the situation for intellectuals was still too much in flux. So rather than an analysis of where the intelligentsia was going, we instead get journalistic portraits of former dissidents and younger intellectuals. This is valuable but dated. At this point with 20 years behind us, I think a more systematic look at the post-communist intelligentsia could be written.
