truly takes you to another time
It is good to know that a writer can, again, get the reader involved in the characters' lives. Donati does this by allowing the reader to accompany the Bonners' on their next quest. The reader can empathize with the difficult decisions being made by all members of the family as they try to keep themselves alive & together, while standing by their beliefs. The babies are born. There is a trip across the ocean to the family's ancestral home...wouldn't anyone give up everything to have all that? Hannah begins to emerge as a wonderful, inquisitive, beautiful young woman who appreciates the family she has. Nathaniel & his wife do much to remain true to thier convictions. There are some unbeliveable rescues & occurences, but all in all the reader can wonder about decisions to be made right along with the characters.

Donati at her best!
This is a wonderful vibrant story that submerges you with the characters leaving you with reluctance to leave them at the end. Fortunately the sequels Sara Donati provides us with allows us to continue. Dawn on a Distant Shore can stand alone as a historical novel with high adventure, romance with fascinating characters. The details of the life that Elizabeth & Nathaniel lead at the edge of the New York wilderness makes one understand the hardships & rewards of life on the frontier in the late 1700's. Their interaction with the community & it's equally colorful inhabitants leads to conflicts but also deep bonding with most. Especially interesting are the Indian relatives & friends giving us a better understanding of their personalities & lives. The story takes us into Montreal, Canada with more information about that city in the time period. The adventures go overseas to Scotland where Nathaniel is informed of his relationship to the Earl of Carryck. There again the story is filled with history of the time & place. Another thing that I like about Sara Donati's novels is the way she lists the chief characters at the front of the book stating their relationship to the story or to each other.
