Winston Churchill said of Britain's fighter pilots who fought off the German fighters and bombers preparing for the invasion of Britain : (I think I quote accurately):
"Never in the history of human conflict have so many owed so much to so few."
I was flying in rear seat of an SB2C as photographers mate and part of Air Group 4 off Essex Class Carrier in 1945 preparing for the invasion of Japan. I have a perspective of immense respect and admiration for Buell and the very few of his fellow naval aviators who were so critical to our winning the air war in the Pacific. It is not too much of an exaggeration to say that many of us might owe our lives to their heroics. Read this and understand how close to disaster we were in 1944 and how we as a nation were so fortunate to be able to call on men like Buell to bail us out.
