Die entscheidenden Phasen und Aspekte dieser wachsenden Unabhangigkeit, die Loslosung von Byzanz, die Etablierung eines Schutzbundnisses mit den Franken, die gewandelte Rolle der romischen Heiligen und die wachsende Bedeutung des Pilgerwesens fur Rom, ausserten sich in neuartigen Bauten und Bildern, in liturgischen und zeremoniellen Innovationen.
