The opera is written in a serialist idiom, but its links, in the vocal lines and the role of the chorus, to the tradition of Italian opera are unmistakable, and indeed Dallapiccola's skill in accomplishing this fusion has contributed to the work's ongoing comparative popularity. There are several other recordings on the market, but this one by Gianandrea Noseda, leading the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Danish National Concert Choir, merits strong consideration.
