Although dated, as it was published in 1996, this is a useful book for anyone contemplating living in Germany for a while or wishing to become acquainted with German customs or the German way of doing things. Much that the author says holds true today as indeed it did a century ago. Continuity is of the essence. In many ways, this is what makes Germany unique, but Germany, too, has moved with the times and this book is a reminder of that, as one can also see what has changed since this book was written, not just the currency. A lot has indeed changed, for better or worse, but many German traditions will probably never change, which is where this book comes into its own.
Lord writes from personal experience, with a good sense of humour and is not at all pretentious or prejudiced. He looks at Germans and Germany as most informed Germans would do. His style should appeal to all, as the book is not meant to be an academic treatise. It is easy to read and does not have to be read from cover to cover. One can dip into it as and when, and it would make an excellent and undemanding companion on a train journey or a flight, almost as if one were listening to a knowledgeable and sympathetic commentator on the German way of life.
