Although not the first in the series of books about a future war featuring submarine Captain Jeffrey Fuller, this was the first of Joe Buff's books that I read. I was hooked. I even missed my subway stop because there were 'torpedoes in the water.' Although a technothriller, he does a good job of explaining terms for us shorebound folks and also includes a hlepful glossary because the navy loves its acronyms. At times, it seems a little formulaic because each Captain figures out the enemy captain's plans, or plans to do the exact same thing as the other guy. You also see that the enemy captain's main character flaw will be his downfall, aided also by his XO, who is not as heartless as he is. However, the climax is totally a surprise and you see Captain Jeffrey Fuller grow into his role as a commander of a stealthy ceramic-hulled submarine involved in a tactical nuclear battle set in the year 2011.
