'Crossover' has brisk pacing, a charming and engaging protagonist, a novel and intricate plot, and splendid evocations of two eras in England: the 1830s and the pre-Thatcher years. The richly drawn setting in the cathedral city of Exeter, with its university, and the surrounding countryside of Devon adds to the pleasure of this slyly conjured pair of worlds.
The sensibility of the writer is of a sort too seldom seen today, coupling a keen eye for social nuance and manners with intelligent humor and thrilling moments of mystery.
And, like Austen, Sayers, or P.D. James, Eubank accoplishes all this without needing to include anything inappropriate for a young reader. A romantic suspense novel (with a dash of the uncanny) for all ages.
