As a lover of mysteries and thrillers, I am always looking for new authors to read. I usually have no problem as I am the manager of a bookstore. But sometimes it seems that especially in the mystery field, the books are kind of the same. If you have not heard of Meg Gardiner, you are in for a treat. I first learned of Meg Gardiner in an article by Stephen King and figured I would read one. Crosscut is the fourth book in the Evan Delaney series and needless to say, I am hooked. Crosscut takes place against the background of Evan Delaney's high school reunion (a scary place for eveyone!) and begins with a home invasion that sets the pace of the book. Evan discovers that some of her classmates have died and others are in danger. The killer is demented and some of the murders are especially brutal and graphic. Evan and Officer Tommy Chang (also a former classmate) try to solve the murders before anyone else dies...particularly Evan. The pace is fast and we also get to know more about Evan and her life. Her boyfriend Jesse is in a wheelchair due to a hit and run accident . The author handles the angst of their relationship with grace and dignity. But this is no highbrow novel. The emotions are real and relatable and Evan is very human and down to earth. Like fathers eveywhere, Evan's is concerned with her engagement and buts in where he shouldn't. Unlike most mysteries, I was not rushing towards the end to see what zany or unbelievable character committed the crimes. I wanted to savor the story and yet wanted Evan to be the victor because I came to care about her, flaws and all. This is not a book to be read quickly in order to get to the next in a series. Although it is an easy read, it is interesting and entertaining and will leave you wanting more. Most of Meg Gardiner's books are not available at your local bookstore. But thanks to Alibris, I was able to get them all. If you think you have read all the mystery authors that are out there, I highly recommend you give Meg Gardiner a try. You won't be sorry
