Updated and wittier than ever, this romantic mystery series features plenty of hot-blooded bluebloods misbehaving. That's definitely the Blackbird Sisters, although Nora, the sister who got stuck with the family estate when their parents blew the country for a tax-evader's paradise, is the responsible one. Her new job requires Nora to hit gala parties every night while dressed to the nines-a trick she manages thanks to her beloved Grandmama's collection of haute couture. But clothes don't always make the woman. Certainly not when her boss, Kitty Keough, the wicked witch of high society, is executed by someone whose motive might have been furthering Nora's newspaper career. Police believe the killer isn't a bad boy from Nora's past, or the suspicious inventor of a fashion breakthrough in women's lingerie. Or even a gay blade who will stop at nothing to inherit an international sheep conglomerate. Bad news? Mobster Mick Abruzzo's name keeps popping up on the suspects list, so Nora must climb the heights of high society to uncover the inconvenient truth...or lose the man who's been making mayhem in her bed. It's fabulous fun in Philadelphia until somebody dies a disastrous death. "Quite possibly the best cozy mystery series in publication-there is never a dull moment." --Fresh Fiction

The Blackbird* sisters are back! In entry #4 of their continuing saga, we find them much as ever. Eldest sister Elizabeth, the Earth Mother with her mob of children by several husbands and whatever, has taken up a franchise for ?Potions and Passions? which has her throwing house parties for women who want to ?spice up? their marriages. The youngest sister, Emma, just broke out of Rehab to play Lady Godiva in a ?Brinker Bra? at a charity lingerie fashion show, complete with stallion and horsewhip. Our heroine, Nora, is still trying to pay off the back tax bill on the 200 year-old family mansion, the only thing left to the girls when their parents skipped to Argentina (or was it Brazil) with the last bits of the family fortune.
Nora?s job as an assistant Social Columnist for a staid old main-line Philadelphia newspaper gets a boost when her boss, the well-disliked Kitty Keogh, is dumped on her doorstep with two tastefully placed bullet holes and a generous binding of panty hose. The police seem to think this was a present from her boyfriend, the son of a New Jersey mob boss, whose father makes home-cured prosciutto for his son?s girlfriend.
As the plot begins to clot, the author blends in an eclectic selection of characters with quirks as well as the standard extras: police, reporters, caterers, models and thugs. The really terrifying thing about her dotty eccentrics is that the reader cannot escape the conclusion that she doesn?t make them up. One suspects that these nuts may all be wandering around spreading delightful loonyness all over the Philadelphia landscape. Although the plots to these mysteries are plausible, the ditzy cast of characters and the heroic efforts of Nora to hold together a bit of sanity in her zany world are the real prizes in these books.
Her main assets are a quick mind, a tendency to faint when stressed and her grandmother?s collection of Dior, Chanel and Balenciaga originals along with an intimate knowledge of mainline society that includes the locations of many of the bodies and the sources and causes of most of the feuds and conflicts. Beware of a tendency to burst out in laughter while reading any of these books. The author has a delightful turn of phrase and can conjure up absurd situations at the drop of a feather boa.
The earlier books in the series are ?How to Murder a Millionaire?, ?Dead Girls Don?t Wear Diamonds? and ?Some Like It Lethal.?
* to "blackbird" was to deal in the slave trade, which may indicate the source of the family fortune.
