"'What do you think?' she at once said; 'some of the company kept asking Ambletrot to give you and poor dear Gidley a benefit; and as all of them--every one--the ladies, the tent-men, and band, and all--offered to give their services, or not receive any pay for one whole day, he at last consented. And as your accident had got known--for it was in lots of country papers--there was a capital tent; and, after deducting, what he said was only fair, for horses' keep, and wear and tear, and, I daresay, a little profit for himself, which is right enough, he has sent the hospital people--I don't know exactly who, nurse--twenty pounds. And nurse was so kind that, thinking you would like to hear the good news from me, she sent off to me to come down at once, as soon as she heard it.'
