Mistakes in the explanation of the cause of a disruptive effect usually lead to a mistaken proposal for a solution. Those who explain poverty as the result of market failure seek alternatives to market regulation. Those who explain poverty as a necessary consequence of market-based relations of production want to abolish the market. Any alternative to capitalist reality is therefore only as good as the underlying explanation of the capitalist mode of production. Accordingly, the purpose of this book is not to imagine a better world, regardless of the reasons for the worldwide impoverishment and misery of large sections of the population, but to derive from the explanation of capitalism the basic principles of an economy beyond capitalism.
