Christie studies the rate of imprisonment in the US and in other nations, with historical data on how the rates change. This approach shows huge differences reflecting the societies' decisions to "criminalize" behavior (drinking, drug-taking, political dissent, youthful misbehavior, in addition to traditional robbing and killing), their decisions whether to imprison or otherwise treat offenders, and their success in preventing an endless cycle of repeated offenses and repeated imprisonment. He gives lots of charts and tables, but his discussion of what they reveal is clear and lively. A good book both for social scientists and for citizens looking at our millions of people in prison and wondering how we got in such a state.
