'Creepers'. That's what they call themselves. Urban explorers who illegally enter sealed buildings - hotels, offices, department stores - many of which have been abandoned for years. Exploring one is like going into a time capsule. Mystery and danger add to the adrenaline rush, as the building's secrets are unveiled. One night in New Jersey, a group of creepers enters the Paragon, a hotel designed and built during the glory days of Asbury Park by a reclusive millionaire. The magnificent structure, which foreshadowed the beauties of Art Deco architecture, is now a decrepit, boarded-up edifice marked for demolition. But the Paragon has a disturbing history, and soon after the group enters it becomes clear that this decaying seven-story building holds more secrets than they could have imagined in their worst nightmares. Danger, terror and death wait for them in a place ravaged by time and redolent of evil.

I hesitated before picking up this book. Some thrillers can be too gruesome, but I loved this one. While I wouldn?t consider portrayals of lopped-off heads and mummified corpses light reading, the descriptions didn?t come across as ?gratuitous violence?. The story takes you inside the urban adventure movement. These explorers find unexpected adventure as they climb and crawl through an abandoned building that turns out to be a very dark and dangerous place. The characters are interesting and the story is suspenseful. It will hold your attention from beginning to end.

The story sneaks up on you!!
This was my first David Morrell book. I heard of him as I researched books that were nominated for (or won) the Bram Stoker Awards. (For those unaware: The Bram Stoker award is presented to those books deemed bested in horror annually). This book won a tie for the 2005 award with Dread in the Beast by Jacob. I looked the book up and was pulled in by the subject of Creepers/Urban Explorers. This was over all a great book due to its twist on the classic theme: Psycho on the loose in a creepy building. I have to admit, the story started out slow and I was on the verge of putting it down. My initial thought was disappointment once a gang of thugs started attacking the good guys. But, just like a rollercoaster once the double eagles are revealed it?s a fast bloody slope downhill. The connections and character links provide a nice suspense mystery story that keeps you flipping pages while the gore will drop your jaw. As a fun read it gets 4 out of 5 stars. (The fifth star I reserve for those books that crept me out and keep me up late at night) You won?t lose out reading a story that contains, white mutant cats, tons of mice, a gang of thugs, a well dressed killer, and a hero with a shady history. I recommend you read this book and join the Urban Explorers!! Oh yeah, don?t forget your infrared goggles.?
