Very sad beginning that leads to a really underwhelming middle, then a very exciting climax. There was very little for me personally that this book had to offer in the way of horror. The beginning develops our characters really well in a very heartbreaking manner with Kate's disease. Then it feels like all we do is wallow over Kate's issues, a bit too much. I get that was the point, but the wallowing to creature ratio was excessive on the wallowing side. We really do not get much of a description of the creature, only slightly creepy guerilla warfare on the house and screaming in the woods, until the climactic bits starting around 3/4 of the way through the book. At one point the author even seems to gloss over a visit, the characters briefly mentioning them the morning after instead of us experiencing it as it happened. Ah well, as much as I have dug into this book, there was very exciting action towards the end and very likeable characters. I didn't at all hate it, I just really didn't quite like it either. I'd give it a 2.5/5 or so.
