I read this book more than 40 years ago, and is one of the best books (if not the best) on drawing and painting that I have ever read. Antony Toney teach that all art styles can be grouped on four classifications: naturalist (focus on what you see), romanticist (focus on feelings), symbolic or conceptual (focus on imagination or knowledge), and classic (focus on order). This is of much help, because it simplifies the process of recognizing or developing your artistic tendency or style. Also very helpful are his teachings on color -like the concept of color progression. He also teach about gesture drawing and contour drawing, and all his teachings are illustrated with his own artwork.
