In 1982 there were only 3 master saddlemakers in the United States. To attain this status, the craftsman had to be proficient in metal work, woodcarving, and leather work. John Hopper was one of these three master saddlemakers. He drew his own patterns and shot all the detailed photographs in this book. His personal goal was not to let this skilled art be forgotten by America. John's written instruction is authentic and simple. It typlifies how Mr. Hopper spoke. After I read his book, I told John that I feel I could build a saddle and he smiled knowing he did his job.
