Perhaps, therefore, I ought to have te-written my work. I did not wish to do so. A book must exist and last out its time as it is. This book is, if I mistake not, a faithful image of the spirit which pre 'vailed, forty years ago, in literature, among the men who cultivated it, and the public who loved it.
