Cordilleras means "mountain ranges," and this album was conceived as a celebration of the majestic mountain ranges that form the backbone of the American continent. The group -- with members from Mexico, Chile, Peru, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. -- Echoes of Incas plays Andes-inspired music combining native instruments (pan pipes, flutes, drums, and percussion) with Spanish guitars, keyboards, and nature sounds. Some of the pieces sound very authentic, such as the horse gallop cadence of "Celebrando," while other pieces float more in the modern world. The fox-trot of "Mar Turqueza" has a dancehall ambience, while "Mujer Gitana" (Gypsy Woman) is an upbeat nuevo-flamenco piece with guitars and pan pipes. Two guitars surround you on "Camino Mistico"; the dream begins with the entry of the deep-throated pan pipes; a double-time beat on the drums then prances with the cadence. "Leganias" (Distant Places) features layered harmonies, slightly dissonant, of pan pipes. Whatever modern liberties the group takes with the arrangements, the Spanish guitars, drumbeats, churango (small ten-string guitar made from an armadillo shell), and pan pipes keep the music distinctively -- and endearingly -- Incan. ~ Carol Wright, Rovi
