This is the first book I ever read by Bujold, I was attracted by a book that spoke of honor, a characteristic sadly lacking in society today. I became a fan of Miles, but Cordelia remains my favorite character in the series. This book tells the background of Miles' parents and Miles himself, and really sets the stage nicely for the rest of the series, which is all about Miles. I love every scene with his parents in each book, though, and I appreciate how LMB has each character grow and mature and look back at the past and learn from it. I am not a big sci-fi reader, but I really enjoy this whole series and recommend it for college and above readers.

Culture Clash
In "Cordelia's Honor," Lois McMaster Bujold turns politics into romance, a most impressive feat. The story covers the meeting and unlikely romance between Cordelia, our heroine from a socialist-democracy type planet, and Aral, the war hero (or war criminal, depending on the point of view) from a violent, feudal empire. The novel bursts at the seams with details of political intrigue and war strategies, yet Bujold carries the reader along effortlessly through the turmoil. The through-line is very strong so I never got lost, or had that feeling of "when are we getting back to the characters?" that I sometimes get when I read "space opera" sci-fi. Anyway, the protagonists and antagonists alike are nuanced rather than stereotyped, which I appreciated, and in general I really enjoyed the book. I have since picked up the following series, which follows the exploits of Miles, progeny of Aral and Cordelia.
