Dudley Pope?s Ramage series is acknowledged as a true successor to C.S. Forrester?s Hornblower. He is a brilliant naval historian and actually served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. His experiences in the war and his meticulous research make Convoy an authentically realistic adventure tale. It is the story of Royal Navy Lt. Ned Yorke?s participation in supply convoy, and how he figures out the German scheme to put a submarine in its center and blow up the merchant ships. The character of Lt. Yorke is heroic, charismatic, and ingenious, along the same lines as Nicholas Ramage. The characters of the Croupier and Jemmy, part of the Admiralty Intelligence unit, are both realistic and comedic. The seamen and captains in the Merchant Marine are delightfully eccentric, and the enemy is properly villainous.
