Excerpt from Contributions to the History of Medical Education and Medical Institutions in the United States of America, 1776-1876: Special Report, Prepared for the United States Bureau of Education Soon after commencing the work of pompiling the following history an invitation was received to deliver an address, on the progress of medi cal education in the United States during the past century, before the International Medical Congress, which had been called to assemble in Philadelphia in September, 1876. In performing that duty, the same facts and in some instances the same language were used as in the fol lowing pages. In 1850, the writer published a small volume, entitled History of medical education and institutions in the United States, from the first settlement of the British colonies to the year Only one edition was printed, and that has been entirely out of the market for more than fifteen years. I have, therefore, copied freely from such parts of it as would aid me in preparing the present work, without using quotation marks, or always making marginal references.
