But as the century hastened to its mid-point, unifying, liberal principles gained headway among the people Of central Europe. In 1847, democratic programmes vied with nationalistic creeds for the attention of the people. Prussia, in that year, had convoked a United Diet which had quarreled with the King and had been dissolved. Unsatisfied popular demands led directly to the mid-century upheaval in the Germanies, which needed only the revolution in Paris to start it Off.
