A little over a year ago I had the privilege of reviewing the first book in this series, ââ?¬Å"Enemies of All,ââ?¬Â? and I found it to be an excellent beginning to the series. With his second book in The Dan Brady Mysteries series, ââ?¬Å"Contagion of the Night,ââ?¬Â? author Edward J. Leahy has given readers another riveting glimpse into the life of Detective Danny Brady and it is, if possible, even better than the first.
At the beginning of ââ?¬Å"Contagion of the Night,ââ?¬Â? Detective Brady is called out to a churchyard where a womanââ?¬â?¢s body has been found. She has been strangled and what starts out looking like a simple case of mugging, turns into a much broader and more dangerous scenario. When Danny goes to speak with the womanââ?¬â?¢s husband he ends up with a lot of new questions and no simple answers, but it definitely starts to look like this is not going to be a straightforward case at all. As Danny and his partner start to investigate further another body shows up and it looks to be connected to the murder of the woman. Once that connection is made, Danny soon begins to suspect that the Mafia is involved and that nothing is as simple as he thought.
As the investigation continues Danny has so much to deal with more bodies, this time belonging to police officers; a wife who is about to give birth; and his partners marriage beginning to disintegrate. Hes also struggling with his own lieutenant who seems to be trying to slow the investigating team down rather than helping them; and quickly learning that organized crime is running rampant in the city and is, most likely, a part of all of the deaths. As the case gets more difficult and more threatening, Danny has to worry about not only himself but also the possible danger to his wife and their new baby.
ââ?¬Å"Contagion of the Nightââ?¬Â? is a story that has a lot of basis in real events and it is an absolutely wonderful story. The plot of the book is riveting and the intertwining of fictional characters with real people and events are done effortlessly. Mr. Leahy is, in this reviewerââ?¬â?¢s opinion, an excellent writer. Each of the characters is amazingly well-developed and you cannot help but stay on the edge of your seat waiting to see what is going to happen next and who the bad guys really are. The dialogue is great and the authorââ?¬â?¢s ability to accurately describe the time period and locations in the story makes the reader feel as if they are actually right alongside Danny and the other characters as they move through their days.
ââ?¬Å"Contagion of the Nightââ?¬Â? by Edward J. Leahy is a perfect book. It is filled with plenty of suspense, danger, twists and turns, and history to keep you involved from page to page. It also has a little bit of fun, some romance, and a beautiful new baby to warm your heart as you wait to see what comes next. I loved this book as much as the first in the series and I cannot wait to see what Danny and his friends and family get up to in the next book. I hope this is a series that continues on for quite a while and I highly recommend it to everyone. 5 stars!
