Seller's Description:
Good with no dust jacket. [8], 148 (ie 200) pp. A small octavo 6" x 3.75" (160 x 95). In full probably orginal leather, five raised bands with gilt in the compartments. Marbled end papers, title with a border and engraving, numerous head and tail pieces. In good condition, the leather a bit scuffed, corners rubbed, spine gilt and label mostly gone but still handsome. Interior front end papers have an old stain (a spill? ), some bibliographic notes in pencil in the blanks, an odd little small doodle on the verso of the title, small amount of foxing, otherwise clean and unmarked. Very nicely printed in French. Printed the same year as the French first edition, no indication of a later printing or new edition. Duclos (1704-1772) was a French author and member of the Academy. "The reputation of Duclos as an author was confirmed by the publication of his Considérations sur les mœurs de ce siècle (1751), a work justly praised by Laharpe, as containing a great deal of sound and ingenious reflection...Rousseau described him very laconically as a man droit et adroit. In his manners he displayed a sort of bluntness in society, which frequently rendered him disagreeable; and his caustic wit on many occasions created enemies. To those who knew him, however, he was a pleasant companion. A considerable number of his bons mots have been preserved by his biographers." This copy not in OCLC.; 8vo 8"-9" tall; 200 pages.
