Preserving works of art for future generations is a central function of the National Gallery. The philosophy of modern conservation is different from that of previous eras - the emphasis is now on long-term stabilization by methods that alter the structure of paintings as little as possible. But if paintings are obscured by discoloured varnishes and old reprints, they are cleaned, often causing anxiety and debate as images are transformed.
