Beethoven composed short bagatelles or "trifles" in addition to his sonatas, variations, and other extended music for the piano. I have loved Beethoven's sonatas for many years and have attempted several of them myself. I have turned to Beethoven's shorter compositions, the bagatelles, only recently.
This Dover book of the bagatelles has large, clear print and fits easily on the piano. It is inexpensive and is reprinted from authoritative editions of the music. The book is suitable for most amateur musicians and music lovers. Most of the bagatelles are in the range of intermediate-level pianists.
Beethoven's most famous bagatelle is "Fur Elise" which has been played by countless young piano students and is immediately recognizable by those who don't know any other classical music. "Fur Elise" is included in this volume, but the major works in this book are the three sets of bagatelles with opus number Beethoven wrote at different states of his life. Beethoven's Opus 33 dates from 1802 and includes seven bagatelles, some of which were written earlier. Opus 119 was published in 1823 and includes eleven bagatelles. The first half of the work consists of short pieces Beethoven composed earlier and edited for this set. The second half of opus 119 consists of even shorter pieces, somewhat enigmatic, that Beethoven composed later. The final set, opus 126, consists of six works and is Beethoven's masterpiece in the form. It is an integrated set of pieces of deep emotional range that belongs with the great music of Beethoven's last years.
I have been learning the opus 126 bagatelles on the piano using this volume and have also been reading through some of the other sets. I have been listening to performances of the bagatelles by pianists including Arthur Schnabel, Alfred Brendel, William Kempff, Paul Lewis and others which has helped me appreciate this music. I have come to find Beethoven in these short, mostly slight works.
This Dover edition offers an excellent way to get to practice or to know Beethoven's bagatelles.
