Another point, which shows the difference that even in China is felt and recognised to exist between ancestral spirits and the gods, comes out in connection with the tablets, containing the style and title of the deceased. It is before these tablets that offerings to the departed are made; and at the State altars and in the State temples the gods also are represented not by images or idols of human shape, but by tablets--the object of this Stateregulation being to assimilate the worship of the gods to ancestor-worship. But, in the thousands of temples to the gods, which are constantly frequented by tens of thousands of worshippers, the substitution of tablets for the anthropomorphic images of the gods has effected practically no hold. The difference between the tablets of deceased ancestors and the images of the gods, is the difference between ancestral spirits and gods; and it is a difference which maintains itself in the popular mind, or common-consciousness, in spite of the attempts to blur it which have been made by the imperial house. The offerings which are made to the spirit of the deceased were made originally to induce the ghost to go away and stay away; and they consisted of the food and raiment which he might have need of in the next world, and for which, if they had not been properly buried with him, he might return to plague the living.
