Thirty-four years after Columbus landed in the "New World," Spanish lawyer Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon founded the first American colony, San Miguel de Guadalupe, on the Atlantic seaboard. The colony, bringing together Spaniards, Africans & Native Americans, was probably situated in Sapelo Sound, coastal Georgia. Contributors discuss different aspects & consequences of this settlement endeavor. DeVorsey examines early maps in the Land of Ayllon & how they fueled European dreams. Hoffman places the Ayllon settlement in the wider context of European/North American history. Thomas surveys the Spanish Mission experience in La Florida. Lyon uses previously-unpublished archival material to examine the Guale & Orista Mission's failure in 1572-74. Landers discusses the important role of Africans in the Land of Ayllon in exploration & settlement. Smith reflects the on-going search for Ayllon's colony site in the archaeological evidence for the expedition.
