Harmsworth. A remote, mist-shrouded island in the Russian Arctic. Archaeology Professor Callum Ross makes the discovery of a lifetime: a prehistoric ice mummy preserved for thousands of years by the sub-zero temperatures. Only, they didn't die of natural causes... As Callum races to unravel the mystery of the mutilated corpse, others race to sabotage the expedition. He and his team are left stranded, and they are not alone on the island. Someone, or something relentless, is stalking them. As the arctic mist descends and the death toll rises, the team is thrust into a nightmare fight for survival, involving submarines, cyber warfare and Spetsnaz. But none of this can prepare them for the real terror that survives deep within the island's heart: a secret so ancient it's been overlooked by time itself.

I received an e-Galley ARC of Colony, authored by Benjamin Cross, for review consideration, what follows below is my honest review, freely given. I am thankful for this opportunity.
I rated this novel 5 stars. There was a stretch as a child when I desperately wanted to be an archaeologist when I grew up; I wanted to see the pyramids, discover the location of Atlantis, and to be a part of the excavation of the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang (an underground city! a moat filled with mercury!). I went into this read with that same childhood excitement.
This is a debut novel, but I couldn't tell from my reading, I only know this from the author's listed accomplishments. I lived in Caerwent, Wales for many years growing up (army brat), and we visited Urquhart Castle in Scotland; to this day I think I saw Nessie, or at least her shadow in the water, on a cloudless day. I always thought of Nessie as a female, though the author refers to the cryptid as male in this novel; he is an expert, so maybe I should bow to his distinction.
Readers of Warren Fahy's Fragment series, or Tim Lebbon's The Silence will find this novel a kindred beast as I did, while still carving out it's own place in the genre. It seems every few years we hear about a species thought extinct being rediscovered, to the delight of the scientific field and whoever else sees the article speaking on the subject. It's stuff like that, plus a love for Tomb Raider games I think, that make novels like this so much fun for me to read. I mean, who wouldn't want to discover something that evolved to survive in a very specific stretch of land, to see, interact, and yes, maybe have to find a way to survive, something never seen by anyone else in the world? It would be breathtaking right? Maybe mortally so.
The author guides us to the Russian arctic, and while we are introduced to a large cast, necessary for a field survey and the military supervision/protection given to it, I never felt overwhelmed by characters; an impressive feat, debut aside. As always, I am hesitant to go into too much detail for fear of spoilers. I will say this had a little bit of everything, so I think readers of many genres will enjoy this novel. It could fall under thrillers, horror (cryptid), international drama, and probably a bunch of sub-genres I don't even know the names of, yet. I look forward to reading this authors work in the future.
