Pleasant Music from Colonial Times
Colonial America by Hesperus is a collection of instrumental music Americans would hear in Colonial times as well as the era of the early Republic. The English colonies in America were a patchwork of cultures and nations and this music reflects that diversity of values and experiences. This music comes from England, Scotland, Ireland, the Colonial homeland, and France. While most of this music is light and jovial some of the tracks are more somber in mood (such as Parting Friends, track 3 and Death and Life, track 18). There are a total of 18 tracks totaling at just under fifty-eight minutes in length. I use the music on this CD as a way to teach life in Colonial America and have found it to be an effective teaching tool with 8th grade American history students. I also find this music to be relaxing and I enjoy listening to it in my car as I drive home; it causes me to reflect on a more gentle time in our nation's history.
