Very Good. No Jacket. 437 pages (complete). A VERY RARE first edition of Perceval Laurence's essays etc. The opp ffp has a compliment's inscription from Laurence. Pasted to he ffp has the remnants of a letter with Laurence's signature. Of interest on the opp-ffp is the signature of William Musgrove Hopley. He, like Perceval Laurence, was a lawyer and a judge in Kimberley and Griqualand. Hopley is best remembered for sentencing to death the first white man to be hanged in Kimberley (controversially). His signature is dated: Kimberley, 18 May 1900. He and Laurence were colleagues and friends. A benign, somewhat serious copy. The boards have wear about the edges and corners and seams from shelving. They have very light scuffing and marks from shelving. The frontispage has long closed tear along the binding side. Otherwise, the pages are baleful, benevolent. Many pages are still uncut! The pages are clean, clear, sober, assured, very confident. fk.
