Mr. Aleshire has done a great job. Cochise has been a hero of mine since my youth, watching "Broken Arrow" on television. After reading this book my feelings have not been diminished.
Cochise must have been a brilliant man, far more understanding than most of the leaders of native aerican tribes. Mr. Aleshire, though his knowledge of the Apache is able to re-construct the long periods of Cochise's life, through his eyes.
The sadness and reality Mr. Aleshire brings to two diverse cultures meeting head on is vivid. It is easy to attack the way the indian was treated (certainly it was bad), but no one then or now has come up with a way to avoid all the mistakes. Neither side was willing to bend. Cochise was an exception, but he had as many problems with his own people as he did with the white eyes.
The world would be a better place with men like Cocise in it. Great book about a truly great american indian - a great American!
