We had not gone far when we saw an old woman standing by a table, on which were gin-gercakes and a keg of beer, and tumblers to drink it from. We thought she must be a very nice person, for she asked all the country people to have some of her cakes and beer, which many of them did. We looked wistfully, I dare say, as we saw the beer foaming up in the tumblers, and the hungry men breaking open the round, yellow cakes. " Come, dears, won't you have some too?" she said, filling two tumblers, and reaching them toward us. " What good folks there are m town!" we thought, and, thanking her, we drank the beer, and were turning away, when all at once she seized us each by the arm, saying, " What do you mean, you little wretches! would you steal my beer?" We fancied ourselves thrust into a dark jail, and starving to death, for we were almost frightened out of our senses, and, laying on the table all the money we had, we ran back to the market wagon as fast as we could, glad to escape with our lives. The horses were harnessed, and Peter was waiting for us to go and buy the new dresses; but we could buy no new dresses, nor anything else, for the woman had kept all our money; and so we learned that people may offer us beer, or anything else, and expect to be paid for it after all. Peter had just taken up the reins to start home, saying, we were little fools to give her all the money, when Aunt Wilton came along, carrying a basket not larger than my two hands. She said we must go home with her, but it seemed to me she did n't want us to go all the time.
