Some of them--these were the graver ones, who seemed to have important affairs on their minds--told how they had spent their time in sick rooms, where people lay tossing in pain, and how they had rested the eyes of these weary sufferers, and shielded them from the glaring light, and how sometimes they had gathered thickly round them, and lulled them into healthgiving sleep. And others told how, when travellers were far from home, and longed to see their wives and children or friends once more, they had comforted them by taking the shape of the dear home figures, and casting the shadows of the dear home scenes. And others, again, told how, when the sun waxed fierce and hot, they had protected weary wanderers by flinging over them the cool, refreshing shade of trees, and hills, and clouds, so that toilers by the wayside blessed the Shadows, and rejoiced in them. Others reported that they had given beauty to the woods, and fields, and streams, by casting lovely translucent shadows over them, and so bringing out to full perfection the form and colour of all created things. There were other Shadows who had not been engaged in such beneficent labours. These were altogether a gloomier and darker band--drooping, careworn, and sorrowladen. They had come from the houses of the very poor; from courts of justice; from prison cells where criminals sat in silence and despair; from close and crowded workshops, where women and little children laboured wearily, from morn till night, and then crept wearily home to snatch a troubled sleep.
