He's backed by a core of musicians from Count Basie's band, including trumpeter Joe Newman, baritone saxophonist Charles Fowlkes, trombonist Henry Coker, and bassist Ed Jones, as well as appearances by Basie veterans Frank Foster and Freddie Green and Monk's longtime tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse (prior to his association with the pianist). Whether Vinson is singing a jump blues like his own "Kidney Stew Blues," a loping swinger like "Cleanhead's Back in Town," or even a work by another singer (Big Joe Turner's "Cherry Red"), his work has stood the test of time and will appeal equally to jazz and blues fans. Vinson also cuts loose with a few hot alto sax solos, though the primary emphasis of this session is his vocals.
