Unfortunately, Scott never recorded nor even cut a piano roll, so his compositions exist today just through his sheet music and recordings by others. This Biograph CD has 15 vintage piano rolls (probably dating from 1906-1919) that were newly recorded in 1974. These are not actually duplications of a keyboardist playing, but rolls that were handmade, so occasionally the music sounds like it was being played by two pianists at once. Fortunately, the beauty of James Scott's music can be heard in these "performances." Among the 15 pieces on this CD are "Ophelia Rag," "Grace and Beauty," "Hilarity," "Ragtime Oriole" and "Climax Rag." Enjoyable music that ragtime collectors will want. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
