Rudi Blesh's "Classic Piano Rags" (1973) has long been one of my musical treasures. Years ago, I discovered Scott Joplin as sheet music on a friend's piano. The music has stayed with me since then. I remember looking for sheet music and finding this anthology which now, unfortunately, appears to be out of print but is still invaluable. Subsequently, I purchased the complete works of Scott Joplin. I have played from it for many years and returned to it the other day to practice rags by Joseph Lamb, a ragtime composer who deserves attention.
Blesh's anthology begins with an introduction to ragtime which begins: "the decade of the 1970s seems to be on the way to becoming the era of the rediscovery of America". Would that it were so, to have a rejuvenation of American culture. Still, ragtime was rediscovered in the 1970s and enjoys a following.
The book includes 81 rags, with original sheet music covers, by 13 composers, African American and white. Joplin's rags are at the center of the collection, as they should be. But Joplin's rags have become easily accesible, making the highlight of the book the many outstanding rags from other composers.
James Scott, one of ragtime's "big three, is represented by 19 rags, many of which, including "Frog Legs Rag", "Ragtime Oriole", "Pegasus" and "Don't Jazz Me Rag -- I'm Music" I have played. (A beautiful rag by Scott, "Grace and Beauty" is not included). Joseph Lamb the other member of ragtime's big three is represented by nine rags, including "The American Beauty Rag" and "Ragtime Nightingale" (to go with James Scott's "Ragtime Oriole). These works are exquisite and graceful, combinging ragtime rhythm with a classical feel. Another of Lamb's great rags, "Topliner Rag" is not included. The collection includes Artie Matthewss' five "Pasttime Rags". Matthews later disclaimed these pieces and went on to found an African American conservatory. But it is a delight to have them. Some of the other composers included are Arthur Marshall, Tom Turpin, and Arthur Marshall.
The book gives a sesne of the breadth of ragtime beyond the central figure of Scott Joplin. I still turn to this anthology to play ragtime, particularly for the works of Joseph Lamb and James Scott which otherwise may be hard to find. Pianists who want to explore this characterisitic American music will benefit from having this book of classic piano rags.
