The most famous year of them all, thanks to Orwell, is the subject of this entry in the Class Reunion series, and it's quite a hodgepodge that's been chosen to give a taste of 1984. The set kicks off with the re-formed Yes' chart-topping "Owner of a Lonely Heart," the biggest hit of the band's career. The dominant commercial force of the year, Michael Jackson, appears twice on Class Reunion: The Greatest Hits of 1984. Capitalizing on his phenomenal success, Motown cleaned out their vaults and managed to sneak into the Top 40 with "Farewell My Summer Love," which dated to 1973. Meanwhile, Jackson also appears on the debut hit by Rockwell, "Somebody's Watching Me." Dennis DeYoung checks in with the mid-tempo "Desert Moon," whose Top Ten placing encouraged a solo career away from Styx that never really happened. "If This Is It," one of the handful of songs from Huey Lewis & the News' Sports release to chart, is included, as is Ray Parker, Jr.'s number one "Ghostbusters," which was accused of "borrowing" liberally from Lewis' "I Want a New Drug." Meanwhile, Class Reunion favorite .38 Special is represented with one of the band's best, the driving "If I'd Been the One," and the gorgeous Cars ballad "Drive," which would appear in a memorable segment during Live Aid a year later, is also present. ~ Tom Demalon, Rovi
