'Clans and families of Ireland' is a beautiful and interesting book by John Grenham (text) and Myra Maguire (artwork). It tells us the story of an entire civilization, a vibrant society with its own customs, traditions and way of life. As part of this Celtic civilization hereditary surnames came into use during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, first among the princely and noble houses of Ireland and then among common people, often related to the grand families. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries coats of arms appear often with symbols taken from nature like harts, boars, eagles, lions, trees etc. In this book the family histories are told together with the beautifully illustrated arms of the better known Clans of Ireland. This book is a work of art that I recommend to anyone interested in history and genealogy.
