Philip K. Roesch joined the 25th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers on August 6, 1862 in Potosi, Wisconsin. He kept a diary of his experiences serving throughout the American Civil War. The diary was written in German, his native language. He would take part in many of the most famous battles fought in the Wester Theater of that war: Vicksburg, both the first and second sieges; the Meridian campaign; the Battle of Resaca; the Assault on Kennesaw Mountain; the Battles of Decatur and Atlanta; Sherman's March to the Sea; the Campaign of the Carolinas; The Battle of Bentonville; the Surrender of Johnson; and the March to Washington. His descriptions of these events, and his own actions, is both riveting and evocative of the time. Well after the war he translated this diary to English with the help of his daughter. Versions of the translated diary have had limited distribution. This book represents the first formal publication available to the public.
